Chew Lips

Flohschanze, 2012

The flea market proves to be the perfect spot for our filming session with the dance-pop duo Chew Lips. “Going to the flea market, that’s what we always do when we have a weekend off in London”, singer Tigs explains smilingly and immediately swarms out to try on shoes, provide everyone with snacks and fall in love with a little bronze owl statue. As the temperature in Hamburg is autumn-like chilly and Tigs is still lightly dressed with last night’s stage outfit we navigate towards the indoor market and end up in the charming bicycle shop Classic Cycles. James sets up laptop and keyboard on the counter while Tigs is making owl sounds to the background music. After this short warm-up Chew Lips go for their new single “Hurricane”. May it be on the big stage or in the small corridor between a lot of bicycles, Tigs always fills the room with her mesmeric whirlwind presence. To James’ cool dico beats Tigs thus sings: “There is nothing that can keep me away, ’cause I’m your hurricane.” No doubt about it!

Flohschanze

Every Saturday one of Hamburg’s liveliest and hippest flea markets takes place around the former slaughterhouse at Neuer Kamp. Situated in the center of the hub around Schanzenviertel and St. Pauli this is the place to be on the weekend for the Hamburger Szene. On a 1200 square metres open air area and some more indoor market space you can find anything from antiques, rummage, furniture, bikes, vinyl or clothing. Apart from vintage and second-hand offers you can also buy new products from various small-sized boutiques either in the market hall or along Marktstraße. Even if you are not up for buying anything, it’s a recommendable hang out spot with many cafés and bars (especially if you stroll along Marktstraße), where you can spend a snugly, yet still animated Saturday.
