Der Nino aus Wien
Karlsplatz, 2010
It was about time for us to do a series of exclusively Austrian bands, so the invitation to film sessions for Vienna’s Popfest came more than handy. Since about 2005 Austria’s pop music scene is thriving again, with lots of new bands, labels and events that keep inspiring each other. Yet there is not one scene, instead the approaches towards making music are refreshingly diverse. Der Nino Aus Wien would definitely score high on a ranking of Austria’s most exiting songwriters. With incomparable nonchalance he tells truly Viennese, yet definitely not stereotypical stories in sometimes highly poetic, sometimes very straightforward words. His performance of “Langsam Schwimm Ich Durch Den Fluss” led us down to the sewers below Karlsplatz, where the Hollywood movie The Third Man was shot.

Karlsplatz
Karlsplatz is a centrally located square, situated between the inner city and the fourth district. In the late 19th century the square was erected on the former riverbed of Wienfluss, which was regulated and canopied. Karlsplatz lies at the foot of the massive and splendid Karlskirche, Vienna’s largest baroque church. Moreover Art-Nouveau-style Otto Wagner Pavillon with Club U, historic Wien Museum, project space, Künstlerhaus, brut and the Technical University are situated on or in the vicinity of the square. The square and its environment have experienced various transfigurations. It has changed from a notorious place for drug dealing to a popular hang out spot. In summer Popfest Wien brings live shows to Karlsplatz, while in winter the square is converted into a big Christmas market.
