Matthäus Bär
OVS Prießnitzgasse, Floridsdorf, 2014
It’s 8 in the morning. Sounds not like the time we usually meet up with musicians who are ready to play for an enthusiastic crowd. But that’s how Matthäus Bär and his entourage rolls. The Vienna-based songwriter has always been into music and has played in an indie rock band before starting to write and play songs for children. Becoming a father might have played a role in Matthäus’ new field of musical activity. It did not take long until he became pissed of by cheesy children’s songs with their cheaply produced keyboard sounds, so he thought why not doing a decent production with real instruments. And that was the hour of birth of Matthäus Bär who either performs solo or with his Little Hipster Band. However, on the day of our filming session the yound and well-dressed musician practices the “Ice” song with the excited pupils of an elementary school. The kids are in high spirits when performing the song – including some dancing, singing and playing of instruments – for another class. After this early-morning-action they are eager to listen closely to a best of Matthäus Bär’s engaging songs.

OVS Prießnitzgasse, Floridsdorf
OVS Prießnitzgasse – also known as Bärenschule (bear’s school) – is an elementary school in the Viennese district Floridsdorf. Just north of the Danube the formerly independent Floridsdorf was incorporated into Vienna in 1905. There are few sights and you most likely won’t find too many visitors strolling around public housing estates and residential areas. However, Floridsdorf lies on the outskirts of Vienna and connects the city with vast green areas. Bisamberg is a popular destination for long walks on sunny days, after which there is no better place to put your feet up than the picturesque winegrower village Stammersdorf with its many traditional Heurigen restaurants.
