Of Montreal
Calle del Arenal, 2012
It’s a rainy and grey spring day in Madrid, when Kevin Barnes emerges from the crowd. Among those dark-jacket-wearing folks his colourful brooch stands out. In the backstreets of the busy Calle del Arenal Of Montreal’s singer and songwriter, who is known as a flamboyant stage character, sits on a doorstep for the performance of the the bittersweet „Du Og Meg“. When we then ask Kevin if he is fine with walking while performing another song, he proposes: „I can walk backwards.“ So he light-footedly trips backwards, when raising his voice for a cover of Melanie’s „What Have They Done To My Song, Ma?“. In the end the catchy tune of this folk pop song paired with Kevin Barnes’ infectious voice has brightened up the day!

Calle del Arenal
From Madrid’s main square, Puerta del Sol, ten streets are emanating. One of them is Calle del Arenal, a busy street leading to Plaza de Isabel II (also known as Plaza de la Opera). The shopping street is mostly traffic-free. Along the street lies church San Ginés and the nightclubs Palacio de Gaviria and Joy Eslava (the venue where Of Montreal played when we met them).
