Sweet Sweet Moon

Barrio Italia, 2013

On a stroll through Barrio Italia in Santiago de Chile Matthias and Lukas of Sweet Sweet Moon get caught at various books, antiques and furniture shops. As many shopowners are working in the streets conversation starts naturally. “Is this Bach?”, Matthias ask and elderly lady, who is restoring a table outside of her vintage shop to the sound of classical music. She soon after tells him the story of her life. Sofia is a candid and cheerful lady, who started her own cosy shop Taller Sofia at the age of 59. And she is very interested in the story that brought the young Austrian duo to her home country, Chile. To aquire a taste for their music, Sofia invites the Viennese band to perform at her shop. As a thank-you Sweet Sweet Moon treat her with a mind-blowing cover version of Daniel Johnston’s “Devil Town”.

Barrio Italia

Barrio Italia is a small neighbourhood in Santiago’s Providencia district. At first sight the Barrio has a quiet, residential feel with its low houses and calm streets. But inevitable you will notice the numerous charming shops that sell antiques, books, furniture, curiosities and much more (such as Taller Sofia, the shop we visited for our Santiago session with Sweet Sweet Moon). Bars, restaurants and galleries have popped up in recent years, major newspapers and travel guides have published praiseful features on the neighbourhood, but Barrio Italia still maintains its laid-back small-town appeal. In 1910 the Italian family Girardi opened a hat factory in the area which now gives the Barrio its name. Many workers lived in small houses around the factory. Slowly the hat business declined and families moved away, leaving warehouses and homes empty and giving space for the current re-use of the old building stock.
