You Can’t Win, Charlie Brown

Douro, 2012

On the last night of Primavera Sound Festival You Can’t Win Charlie Brown play a fulminant show in the heart of Porto. We meet the Portuguese band amidst the festival crowd after their gig at Hard Club. After some chattering with fans the six piece band is finally complete and ready for a short walk to the shiny Douro riverside. In this nightly postcard-like setting with the illuminated Ponte Dom Luis I arch bridge and the Jardim do Morro in the background You Can’t Win Charlie Brown do a marvelous take of “Sort Of”. In the dim light at a wooden gate the Lisbon-based band then strikes a melancholic chord with “Sad Song”. What a solemn ending!

Douro

The Douro rises in northern-central Spain and reaches the Atlantic Ocean in Porto. With a total length of 897 kilometres it is the third longest river in the Iberian peninsula after the Tagus and Ebro. The river forms part of the national border line between Spain and Portugal. The International Douro Natural park and the Arribes del Duero Natural Park are situated in this isolated and unspoilt area of narrow canyons. The steep sides of the Douro river valley are also famous for its rambling vineyards and charming quintas (local farms). In this traditional setting lies the origin of Port wine (the Portugese region around Pinhão and São João da Pesqueira is considered to be the centre). Finally Douro enters its breathtaking last station. Here, in Porto the river passes many elegant bridges and creates a spectacular backdrop to one of Europe’s most beautiful cities before entering the vast ocean.
